Fàilte!

Welcome to the New England chapter of An Comunn Gaidhealach America!

What is ACGA?

An Comunn Gaidhealach Ameireaga is dedicated to promoting Scottish Gaelic language and culture in North America. We help build and maintain contact between speakers and learners of Scottish Gaelic across the continent and worldwide. We maintain a nationwide database of Gaelic teachers and classes. We organize Gaelic events such as the U.S. Mòd and the annual Immersion Weekend.

What is Scottish Gaelic?

Scottish Gaelic — called Gàidhlig in Gaelic — is the native Celtic language of Scotland. It is the direct descendant of the Old Gaelic which was brought to what is now Scotland from Ireland around the fifth century AD, and has been spoken there continuously ever since. Political and economic upheaval in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland during the last two centuries has resulted in a worldwide Gaelic diaspora, most notably in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, the home of North America’s only surviving Gàidhealtachd (Gaelic-speaking area). For further information about the Gaelic language and its history and linguistic relations, see the Gaelic Links and Resources page.

How can I learn Gaelic?

There are many textbooks, dictionaries, and reference books available for Gaelic — see the Gaelic Links and Resources page for details. ACGA also keeps a nationwide database of Gaelic classes, teachers, and study groups; we can help you find resources in your area.

How can I get involved?

ACGA is a volunteer run, nonprofit organization. You can join ACGA as a member through the national website. Your membership dues help fund our events and keep the society going. Cùm a’ Ghàidhlig beò — keep Gaelic alive!
