Dear Students and Parents,

Bliadhna mhath ùr! Happy New Year! The winter proves to be a busy time for the Callanish School. There are lots of performances coming up and fundraising activities. Fundraising Update

The fall Holiday sale brought in a total of $566.60 for the school. Thanks to everyone who participated. This money will go to pay for the new hose that just arrived. While we only broke even at the Hogmanay Ceilidh, we were able to raise $992 from the raffle!!! A complete list of the winners will appear in the next HLSS Chanter. This money will be saved towards our future trip to Scotland.

February is Chocolate Month

Our annual chocolate sale will begin the first week of February. Each child will be given one case of Hershey’s Chocolate to sell. The sale brings in over $1,000 annually and is an easy fundraiser. If anyone would prefer to sell the Hilliard’s Chocolate, Maggie can get a few cases of that as well.

Callanish Winter Fling

Believe it or not, the Callanish Winter Fling is finally upon us. Maggie will have a complete list of jobs needed to be filled for the weekend. Please sign up in class as we need everyone’s help. All students are expected to attend Sunday’s workshop regardless of whether they compete or not on Saturday. This workshop costs $10 and is from 9-11 AM on Sunday, January 6th. Please bring 2, 6 once cans of tomato paste and a hula-hoop. The judge will keep us guessing what these are for!

New Classes Added

Several new classes are being added to the Callanish line up this winter. First, a Scottish Dance I class for 3 & 4 year olds will be held on Fridays from 5-5:30 PM. Second, a Gaelic Singing/Step dancing class for children ages 6+ will be held on Mondays from 4-5 PM. Please see Maggie about proper shoes for step dancing. Third, Thomas Leigh will be holding a beginners Scottish Gaelic course on Sundays beginning in April. The class will either take place in Sandwich or Hyannis, depending on where students are coming from. The class will cost $10 per week and run for 8 weeks.

FUSTA Registrations

Maggie will be handing out the 2002 FUSTA registration forms after the Callanish Winter Fling. For those of you who are new to the world of Highland dance competitions, dancers need to be registered with this organization in order to compete. Please return the forms to Maggie by January 25th and she will mail them to the registrar as a school. Therefore, you do not need to include the SASE. For those of you competing in January, Maggie will hold on to your card after the event in order to mail things in that much sooner.
