The Newsletter of the Callanish School of Celtic Arts

Dear Students and Parents,

April kicks off the competition season. There are lots of Highland Games to attend this year. Please check the table regularly for entry forms. If you're planning on going on a vacation and want to get in a festival, just ask and I can get the necessary information. Now is the time for students to really start practicing. I’m sure we'll cause a stir when we arrive to the scene wearing our smart new warm up suits!

Mòran Taing,

Maggie Carchrie

Tartan Day 2002

Tartan Day is April 6th. The festivities have been moved to the Wixon School, Route 134, S. Dennis. Callanish Dancers are scheduled to perform at 12:30 and 2:15. Please arrive dressed by Noon. Maggie will verbally tell parents which dances their children will be performing. Please sign up to help out at the Callanish table.

HLSS Scholarship Winners

Congratulations to the following dancers who received a $200 scholarship from the HLSS:

Yard Sale

The 3rd Annual Callanish Yard Sale is scheduled for Saturday, May 25th from 9 am to 4 pm at the Carchries', 85 Camp Street, Hyannis. Please start saving your unwanted items for the sale. Maggie will be handing out price tags to mark your items ahead of time. Items can be dropped off the Friday afternoon/evening before at the Carchries'. We will also need some extra help with clean up afterwards. If anyone is willing to make a dump run with their truck or bring stuff to the Goodwill, please let Maggie know. All proceeds will go towards the purchase of new Highland vests for the girls and jackets for the boys.

May is Tupperware Month

During the month of May, the Callanish Dancers will be selling Tupperware again! This brought in a sizeable profit last year (almost $500). We will kick the month off with a Tupperware party at Maggie's house on Saturday, April 27 at 2 pm. Please feel free to invite friends and family to our event!

Gaelic Language Class

Beginning Sunday, April 28, Thomas Leigh will begin an 8-week introductory class in Scottish Gaelic for Teens and Adults. The class will be held at Maggie and Thomas' house in Sandwich. The class will meet from 2-3 pm, and it will cost $100 for non-Callanish students and $90 for Callanish Students. Please call Thomas to register: (508) 888-0107.

New School Policy

A new school policy is immediately in effect for the rental of school costumes and swords. If a student stops dancing, items must be returned to Maggie within 30 days of termination. If items are not returned on time, the security deposit will not be returned when the items finally come back. Yet again, there have been problems with items not being returned to the school. Hopefully this policy will eliminate any future hassle.

Scotland 2004

Tentative plans were made at the last parents' meeting to take our trip to Scotland during April school vacation, 2004. That leaves just about two years to fundraise like mad! Maggie has decided to keep track of the actual profit each student brings to the school. Paying gigs and events like car washes will be divided evenly by the number of students in attendance. The profit each child earns from chocolate sales etc. will go directly to the child. Each student will have an account and you can find out your balance at any time. When the time comes to pay for the trip, the school will contribute what the child actual earned. The difference will be made up by the parents. Therefore, parents who are not able to fundraise but have the resources to pay for the trip are not obligated to fundraise. Several parents have opened bank accounts for their children. HLSS scholarships, etc., could be saved to help defray future costs. Profits from some activities, such as our yard sale, will be used towards operating expenses such as new vests, medal testing and workshops.

Please Note: Chocolate Money is Due ASAP!!!

House Warming Party

Maggie and Thomas would like to invite all the Callanish dancers and parents to their house warming party on Sunday, April 21 from 2-5 pm. Call Maggie and Thomas if you need directions.
