The Newsletter of the Callanish School of Celtic Arts
Dear Students and Parents,
Welcome back after a much needed Christmas vacation! Lots of exciting things are coming up this winter for the Callanish School including our Winter Fling, the DELCO dance workshop and plenty of performance opportunities. Happy practicing!
Mòran Taing,
Maggie Carchrie
Beginning Chanter Lessons
On Friday, January 10th, the first monthly chanter lesson with Donald Lindsay will be held from 7-8 PM at Maggie’s house in Sandwich. The cost of attending is $12. Please register with Maggie before the 10th.
Change of Dress Code
Beginning this month, all female dance students will be required to wear leotard and tights during lessons. Dancer sweaters and shorts are also permitted. Two good sources for finding inexpensive dance wear are:
A full hand book of Callanish policies will be handed out in January. Rules will be strictly enforced.
Sewing Party Planned
On Sunday, February 2nd there will be a sewing party at Maggie’s house in Sandwich from 1-4 PM. There will be lots of jobs for sewers and non-sewers and we need everyone’s help! Maureen Anderson will be heading up the afternoon. If you have a sewing machine, please bring it. American Girl Doll kilts and scrunchies are on the agenda. If you don’t have an American Girl Doll, bring your favorite teddy bear if you would like him outfitted in a mini-school kilt. Every year we made hundreds of dollars for the School by selling these items at HLSS events and Highland Games. We need to make back some of the money that was recently spent on new vests and hose. Call Maggie if you need directions.
Gaelic Lessons Slated
Beginning in January, Thomas Leigh will begin a new Gaelic I class at the Sandwich Community School. The class will meet from 6:00-7:30 PM beginning on Tuesday, January 7th.

DELCO Mid-Winter Highland Dance Workshop
The Callanish Highland Dancers will be traveling once again to Philadelphia, PA for the famous DELCO workshop from February 14-16, 2003. Well-known instructors from Scotland and Canada will be there teaching for the weekend. All Beginner to Premier dancers age 8 and older are encouraged to attend. Maggie and Joy Pell will be driving kids down and chaperoning the weekend. The cost for the workshop is $60 and the cost for the hotel and gas is approximately $40. Children will have to bring money for food. The entourage will be leaving from the Sagamore Friendly’s at 7:30 AM on Friday, February 14th and returning either Sunday night or Monday afternoon. There happens to also be an indoor Celtic festival in the same area and if there is enough interest, we will stay an extra night so that we can attend. Please see Maggie for registration forms.
Callanish Winter Fling Update
Things are well underway for our 2nd annual Callanish Winter Fling. We will be having a raffle in conjunction with Saturday’s competition to help defray our costs. Please consider donating an item yourself or getting a restaurant or shop to donate something. I have copies of the HLSS tax exempt status if you would like a copy when approaching stores. All donations will be tax deductible. Also, there are lots of jobs that still need to be filled. Maggie will be handing out a sign-up sheet for jobs that weekend.
Scotland 2004
Can you believe that next year we will be off to Scotland? A $100 refundable deposit per person is due to Maggie by March 1st. During the next month a bank account will be opened for the trip and Maggie will let you know who to make the check out to (not the usual Callanish School of Celtic Arts). Many of our reservations will require a down payment and that is why the early deposit is needed.
