The Newsletter of the Callanish School of Celtic Arts

Dear Students and Parents,

Now that April has arrived, competition season is officially here. Remember to keep practicing your dancing and fiddle during this busy time! The spring always means a lot of activity for the Callanish School, so please read your newsletter carefully! A special prize will be given out to any student who can tell Maggie the correct pronunciation of the name of our newsletter and its meaning!

Mòran Taing,

Maggie Carchrie

New Dance/Singing Session

The next dance and Scottish singing session will begin the first week of May for students in W. Barnstable and Yarmouthport. Please have your tuition paid in full by your last class in April.

New Fiddle Session

The next fiddle session will begin on Tuesday, April 1st. Your tuition is due NOW!

Scotland Trip Postponed

Due to recent world events, our trip to Scotland in 2004 has been postponed. Alternative plans are being discussed such as a trip to a Highland Games near Epcot Center in January. Stay tuned for details.

Adult Step Dance Class Slated

This months’ adult step classes will be held on Monday, April 14th and 28th. Cost is $10 per lesson plus the $10 registration fee.

Gaelic Lessons Slated

Beginning in May, Thomas Leigh will start-up a new Gaelic I class at the Sandwich Community School. The class will meet from 6:00-7:30 PM beginning on Monday, 5th May .

May is Tupperware Month

As in years past, May is Tupperware month. Maggie will be handing out catalogs and forms to students during the first week of the month. Further details such as due dates etc. will be provided later. This is a great fundraiser for the school as we get to keep 25% of what we sell. Remember, if you are a new dance student, you need to “earn” your kilt. This is a great way to work towards getting your outfit.

Yard Sale Slated

Our 4th Annual Callanish Yard sale will take place on Saturday, May 24th from 9-4 PM at Maggie’s house in Sandwich. Maggie will be handing out price tags and stickers. Please price your items and either load them into Maggie’s car during lessons or arrange to bring them to her house. We will also need tables and volunteers to work that day and make dump runs and trips to the Good Will. Proceeds will go towards the purchase of outfits.

Getting Places etc.

Please stay tuned for driving directions to our upcoming gigs. Maggie does not always know ahead of time how to get places due to hold-ups on the other end. Please check your e-mail for up-dates on directions and gig details.

End of the Year School Trip

Students of the Callanish School will be taking a trip to the Zooquarium on Sunday, June 15th. Dennis Markum, fiddle student, owns the Zooquarium and has graciously invited us all down for a free, end-of-the-year event for the children. Please let Maggie know if you are planning on attending (kids and parents) so that we can give Dennis a head count. We will be going out for ice-cream afterwards, compliments of our fundraising account!

On Friday, September 12th the Callanish School will be putting on a Gala Concert to raise funds for our trip to Scotland next year. The concert will be held at 7:30 PM at Cape Cod Community College. Ticket prices will be $15/$10. Each family planning on going to Scotland will be required to sell 10 tickets to friends and family. Select dancers will be invited to perform along with nationally known groups “Sheiling” (Donald Lindsay’s band), Lissa Schneckenburger’s trio, and “Rù-Rà” (Maggie’s band). Less experienced dancers will serve as the ushers for the evening. The Colum Cille Pipe Band will also be opening and closing the show.
