The Newsletter of the Callanish School of Celtic Arts
Dear Students and Parents,
Can you believe that the school year has almost come to a close? Our end of the year trip to Zooquarium is scheduled for Saturday, June 14th. All Callanish families are invited to attend. Massage therapist, Nicole Horn, will be coming to dance lessons the week of June 23rd to give each dancer a 15-minute foot massage, compliments of our fundraising account. This is my special way of thanking the dance students for all their hard work this year. The summer fiddle and dance schedule is now available. Please have your tuition paid in full by your last lesson in June.
Mòran Taing,
Maggie Carchrie

An Important Discussion on Dance Costumes
It has been brought to Maggie’s attention that there needs to be
some clarification on school costumes. All school costumes are owned by
the Callanish School, thus really owned by Maggie. Since children are
constantly growing and new students are beginning lessons all the time,
families had been asked to help fundraise. All students that began lessons
after August, 2000 are required to earn $300 towards their outfits, as
each dance outfit costs between $400-$600 (depending on the size). The
money that you earn selling stuff (Tupperware, chocolate, Christmas junk)
goes into your personal account for this purpose. The money earned on
group fundraisers such as yard sales and car washes goes towards making
up the difference between that and the actual cost of the outfits. Your
fundraising money will be used to help subsidize your 2004 school trip
expenses only after you have earned this $300 towards your school outfit.
If you have earned more than $300 and you will not be going on the trip,
that money cannot be used towards lessons or any other personal expenses;
money fundraised for the school belongs to the school, and will be used
for school purposes. We should all be helping out for the good of the
school. An itemized list of what your child has earned will be handed
out the first week of July.
Due to the dramatic decrease in fundraising initiative on the part of
the parents, all fundraising after the fall concert has been suspended.
Half of the money from the fall concert will go towards our trip and the
other half will go towards reimbursing our savings account as Maggie has
had to use your costume deposits to purchase kilts. Therefore, if your
child outgrows their outfit they may end up wearing one that doesn’t
quite fit correctly for competition. Since the school outfits were meant
solely for the purpose of performance, it will be up to you to purchase
a kilt (in whatever Tartan you want) that fits correctly for competitions
if you end up with one that doesn’t fit right and your child is
competing.
Yard Sale Update
Our annual yard sale was held on Saturday, May 31st after being postponed from the previous weekend due to rain. We were able to raise $268 towards our most recent kilt order.
Tupperware Update
The Tupperware will be delivered the week of June 9th.
End of the Year School Trip
Students of the Callanish School will be taking a trip to the Zooquarium on Saturday, June 14th (please note the day change) from 1-4 PM. Dennis Markum, fiddle student, owns the Zooquarium and has graciously invited us all down for a free, end-of-the-year event for the children. Please let Maggie know if you are planning on attending (kids and parents) so that we can give Dennis a head count. We will be going out for ice-cream afterwards, compliments of our fundraising account!
