The Newsletter of the Callanish School of Celtic Arts

Dear Students and Parents,

Did you know that St. Patrick was actually Scottish? March is already here and it will be a very busy month for the Callanish School. I hope that all of you will be able to perform at or attend the upcoming events planned. The multi-cultural fair at 4 C’s and the Newport St. Patrick’s Day Parade will sure to be highlights of the year. Happy practicing! And don’t forget the rare chance to see Lissa and Rù-Rà perform together locally! The spring lesson schedule will be available by March 15th. Please have your tuition paid in full by April 1 to avoid a $10 late fee.

Mòran Taing,

Maggie Carchrie

February was Chocolate Month

February was chocolate month. Please have all money returned to Maggie as soon as possible. There is plenty of chocolate left, so please let her know if you’d like to be an on-going seller.

Sewing Party Scheduled

There will be two sewing parties planned this spring, the first of which will be held on Sunday, March 14th from 1-5 pm at Maggie’s House in Sandwich. The second will be held on Saturday, April 17th from 1-5 pm at Emma Haselton’s House, 195 Lothrop’s Lane, W. Barnstable. We will be making tartan dog coats as the spring fundraiser. We will need lots of help cutting and sewing and children are invited to attend if they are old enough to cut well. Please let Maggie know if you will be able to attend and if you have a sewing machine.

Corned Beef & Cabbage Supper Postponed

The corned beef and cabbage supper at the Bookstore and Restaurant has been postponed until later this spring, perhaps for Tartan Day. Please stay tuned for details.

Another New Costume Policy

There has been a growing problem of students not returning costumes owned by the school in a timely manner. If your child decides to stop dancing or you decide to purchase your own costume, Callanish items need to be returned within 30 days from the date you informed Maggie of this decision. Kilts need to be dry cleaned and tartan hose need to be washed in cold water and woolite, hung to dry. If you currently have any Callanish costumes, swords, etc. that you are not using, please return them to Maggie by April 1st. Maggie would also appreciate any help with getting former students’ items returned.

Cape Breton Trip Update

After the parents’ meeting last month, it was decided that the trip to Cape Breton this July is no longer an “official” school trip. Students and families are still encouraged to attend the Gaelic College from July 26–31, but all planning, payments, etc. will be left up to the individual families. Anyone who helped fundraise for either the canceled Scotland Trip or Cape Breton trip will still receive their funds towards a camp this summer (that could be either dance camp in Troy, NY or the Gaelic College). As a reminder, anyone beginning lessons after August, 2000 must have raised $300 towards the purchase of their kilt before any money is allocated towards tuition this summer. After September, any future fundraising will only go towards the good of the school and not towards individual accounts. If you had raised money but have chosen not to attend a summer school, your money will be forfeited and placed back into the general fundraising account.
